Benefits of applying the principles of multimedia learning

Multimedia presentations are becoming increasingly common in today’s technologically advanced society. As an educator, I have used and witnessed it being utilized as a tool to improve students’ learning experiences. Presentations can now accommodate a variety of learning styles by using audio, video, and graphic elements. When multimedia principles are applied properly, there are several benefits.
Cairncross and Mannion (2001) wrote an article about how interactive multimedia affects learning outcomes and highlighted benefits such as increased student engagement, the ability to cater to different learning styles, and the ability to improve knowledge retention by using interactive elements.

Ruslia (2015) conducted more study to corroborate the aforementioned conclusions. Ruslia (2015) conducted a study on students to determine how multimedia technologies effect their performance. The findings revealed that multimedia presentations with high interactivity, such as those with animation, narration, or static graphics, produced higher learning outcomes than those with low interactivity.

Multimedia presentations can be powerful on multiple levels. From primary to university. According to Abdulrahaman et al. (2020), interactive components are effective for younger students, but they can also be utilized to simplify and “chunk” more difficult content for older students. Abdulrahaman et al. (2020) corroborated the aforementioned publications by stating that multimedia caters to diverse learning styles while also making educational content more accessible.
